Pretentious comments from a pretentious person

A Writing Routine

When writing you cant just write when you feel like it because more than likely you will have the same attitude as me when you take this approach: Ill do it later.

Well the fact is, there is no later to be doing it because when you get to later you will put it aside again. What you need is something called a writing routine.

When to Write

Every single day! Every day you should write something whether it be a short story, another scene or chapter of your book or a poem. Blog posts do not count. Blogs are often an excuse not to write : )

In the day it is up to you when you write. It could be when you wake up or at night or after school. The important thing is that you do write for an hour or more every day.

You must ensure you keep to this time in the day, so psuh all other things aside and dedicate that time slot to writing. It needs to become ritual. It needs to become routine.

Maybe you can treat yourself. After an hour of writing you can go online and play a game. This reward method works well for many people.

Where to Write

Where you write needs to be a place quiet and solitary. Just a place for you to sit down without distractions from others. I write in my room on my PC, I rarely get interrupted.

If you are a hand writer then you may choose somewhere of inspiration like a garden for example. This will inspire your creative senses.

What to write on

The age old debate amongst writers is PC versus Hand writing. There are several reasons I am in favour of PC. The first is simply speed, I am a fairly fast typer so I am able to get mounds more done than if I was to go long hand. The other is a story simply flows better when I type it.

Hand writing is preferred by writers who don’t really ever finish a novel or short story writers. I gives them time to think about what they are going to write before writing it. Beware: This is a slow process and you are likely to bore of it.

A Writer’s Music

Listening to music when writing is good for some writers. It enables them to feel a type of emotion. For example if you are doing an angry or destructive scene heavy metal or red classical would be good types of music to listen to.

If you aim to do a beautiful scene then I recommend Pachebel’s Canon or morning classical types of music.

Depression: Indy

And so on…

You may find that music isn’t for you and you prefer just silence.
